Sweden introduces gender-coded ATM machines
In Sweden your "equipment" will soon play a crucial part in something as trivial as getting cash from the ATM-machine - Gender specific ATM-machines are taking Sweden by storm.
We're used to toilets and changing rooms being gender-specific, but ATM-machines? Not so much. That's about to change in Sweden.
In her eternal strife to promote gender fairness equality, the country of Sweden seeks to separate the lads from the ladies in and around money-machines.
In Stockholm a number of gender-specific ATM-machines are already on trial, and as early as summer 2016, all existing ATMs in the country are expected to
be replaced by more tolerant ones.
The idea behind this endeavour is to create safe-spaces in a situation where individuals may feel exposed and vulnerable, you know, holding when precious money, and prevent sexism from occurring in the line behind the current money-collector. The ATMs are ergonomically design, and will be of different heights so as to account for the average height difference between men and women. The new ATMs will even be painted in typical boy and girl colours so as to make them easier to identify. If you're a bloking having a go at the lassies ATM and vice versa, you can expect a hefty fine, and if you persistently try to withdraw money from the "wrong" ATM,
the authorities may be notified.
Incumbent minister for gender equality (yes, such a post really exists) Åsa Regnér, motivated the new rules thus:
- We're striving for a Sweden where everyone can feel safe, regardless of sex. We deem ATMs and their immediate surroundings to be high risk areas for the occurence of sexism. Just imagine a woman with a large, shapely behind going to withdraw some moeny on a hot summer's day, her buttocks only covered in short shorts, she may even have to bend over a bit to press the numbers, just imagine the likelihood of male standing behind her entertaining sexist and Patriarchal thoughts. We want to protect women from this sort of thing, that's why we're taking such radical actions.
Not only men and women get their own ATMs, genderless individuals, attributed with the gender neutral pronoun "hen", will also get their own machines.
- The hen-ATM is a must for people who've got money but no no gender.
A couple of guys from the Swedish YouTube channel STHLM panda took to the streets to gauge the Swedes reaction to the new law.
