Fearne leaving is the best thing to ever happen to radio
I see that hashtag everywhere and it makes me want to gag. I’m literally shaking right now at seeing all these godforsaken people saying they will miss her or that she’s the best thing to have ever happened to radio. Every single one of you suck and don’t know anything about fuck all. That’s right, #FarewellFearne has been attacking my eyeballs all day and I’m tired of it. Fearne does not deserve these accolades, she doesn’t deserve shit and as a feminist, I’m going to tell you why.
Okay first let’s look at the situation. Today was Fearne Cotton’s last day on BBC One radio. She began working for the station in September 2005 where she did a morning slot with Reggie Yates. Then in 2007, she moved on to the Chart Show, becoming the first ever permanent female radio presenter for the programme. Over the years she has become a much loved DJ and her fans have created this weird cult who think everything she touches turns to Gold. But alas, nothing lasts forever and now she’s leaving everything, because apparently she wants to focus on family and kids instead of her professional career. I still remember when she first came to radio 10 years ago. I was so happy that there was finally a woman presenting the show, and even though I was still very young and didn’t know much about feminism or the Patriarchy, I was still happy that there was one less white male on the air. Now however, ten years later, I am not at all impressed with her and I am glad she’s buggering off and getting off the air. In fact, I think her leaving radio is the best thing to have ever happened to British radio and I hope she never EVER comes back Fearne had such a great opportunity. She had such a great opportunity, being the first prominent female presenter in a testosterone fuelled man’s world, to inject feminism in everything she did and promote gender equality over the airwaves – but she chose not to. She chose to be one of the boys. She chose to join in the infantile banter and act like a muppet instead of looking at the issues discussed through a lens of social justice and feminism. She chose to squander her chances to lead a feminist revolution. In the chart show she should have dissected every FUCKING song with feminist rigour and made sure that women didn’t take offence to any misogynistic lyrics or macho expressions. I’m so glad she’s leaving. She contributed NOTHING to radio and every second I’ve had to listen to her I’ve cringed. Just knowing what an incredibly platform she had and how little she actually did with it in the way of promoting social justice or feminism makes me sick. I’m sure I would’ve been a much better radio host and I would not have been such a flat, boring ass-licker of the Patriarchy. I would take risks, I would speak out against my male colleagues, I would challenge their male chauvinistic views every opportunity I got, not have fun with them like a ditzy Barbie doll. And YET I’m still working as a barista and she’s a millionaire for doing fuck all. And instead of listening to her female critics she does the absolute worst thing she could have ever done – she quits to be a stay at home mom and focus on her family. That is absolutely insane, by doing that she’s setting feminism back decades and contributes to a society where women think it’s okay to be home with their children instead of being, strong, fierce independent women in the workforce. You know what Fearne, I’m glad you’re leaving, even though you’re leaving in a very sexist way (to become a housewife). You’re the worst thing to have ever happened to radio and I don’t understand how anyone can look up to you, you supporter of the Patriarchy. Now I’m too angry to write anymore so BYE! I’m starting a new hashtag, #FuckOffFearne, get on Twitter and discuss it with me
