BREAKING: All future FIFA World Cups cancelled
Football festival kicked – In the wake of the scandal, FIFA terminates all plans for future World Cups.
Last week, Nine FIFA officials were indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice for taking $150 million in bribes while endowing FIFA broadcast rights. Before long, a Swiss investigation into the bidding process for the two upcoming World Cups, the 2018 Russia World Cup and the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Since the story broke, Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA has resigned from his post. This story of corruption has caused worldwide outrage but is, unfortunately, symptomatic of the sporting world, where so much money is at stake. But the story doesn’t end there – no – this morning, one of Sepp Blatter’s representatives made a statement that has shocked the footballing world. This is what he had to say: - This scandal is unprecedented in FIFA history and has created such a strain on the organisation that its dissolution feels ominously near. We have decided, for better or for worse to cancel all future FIFA World Cup events effective immediately. There will be no 2018, no 2022, no 2026 and so on. We deem it financially improbable that any of these events should be feasible after all that has happened and as an organisation we no longer feel worthy of hosting such a prestigious event. I am sure there will be other football events in the future, but they won’t be organised by FIFA. The news has sent shockwaves through the football community. Founded in 1930, the FIFA World Cup was the biggest Footballing tournament ever to have existed and was watched by billions worldwide. Its cancellation will have a big, long lasting impact on the most popular game in the world. According to reports from Russian and Qatar newspapers, Putin and the Qatar government are furious that the substantial amount of money they have used to develop stadiums and facilities will be flushed down the toilet – there are even reports of the two nations demanding financial reparation – in the billions of dollars – for this disaster.
We spoke to Igor Mirongainsinov, a Russian sports journalist who has been covering the preparation for the Russian World Cup ever since the Brazil World Cup in 2014, this is what he had to say: - It is with utmost grief and sadness that we receive these news. The World Cup was to be a way for Russia to show its prowess, attract tourists and improve the popular image of Russia, but now it’s all over. It’s sad, but I suppose this is how it will have to be (UEFA) Union of European Football Associations is according to reports debating whether it should expand their cup to include the entire world, but those are only preliminary reports. Regardless of what happens now, this is a sad day for all football fans. To discuss the cancellation of the FIFA World Cup, tweet under #WordCupCancelled
