Obama officially declares 4th of July Muslim Day
The Muslims get the 4th - Obama declares Independence Day "Muslim Day" Tomorrow is the 4th of July - the day when Americans across the country celebrate their independence from the British. It's usually a day full of fireworks, BBQ, parades, concerts and family reuinions, but there's one man in this country who seeks to change that and that man happens to be none other than President Barack Obama. At a press conference earlier this afternoon, Obama spoke about a rebranding of the holiday. This is what he had to say: - It is time for America to update its holidays and I see no better holiday to update than 4th of July. 4th of July largely celebrates White hegemonic culture that is steeped in Imperialism and hatred, and basically extols the efforts of those early Americans who comitted genocide on the Indian population. America should celebrate a new identity on the 4th, an identity that really reflects our melting pot culture and emphasizes that we welcome and tolerate all colors and creeds. This is why the White House and I have decided to turn the 4th of July into 'Muslim Day', a day dedicated to celebrating diversity and giving our Muslim citizens a feeling of being welcomed into our society. Muslim day will have every man, woman and child, parading in support of the millions of Muslims that live in our country and I hope many of them will actually get the opportunity to convert to Islam on this monumental day. I see a bright future with Muslim Day and even though I foresee some backlash from the confederate flag-waving right, I think this is what makes the most sense in today's America. The decision has, not unexpectedly, drawn large criticism from the political right. Rush Limbaugh blasted the president in his radio show: - I hardly recognise this country anymore. Anything that is holy in this country, Obama seeks to destroy and pervert into something unrecognisable. Why did he have to make the 4th of July Muslim Day? Why couldn't he have ascribed it to any other date? Let me tell you why - because he wants to spite all red blooded Americans who've worked hard for this country to go around and make those who feel proud to live here ashamed of themselves.
